Latest news on the Highgate Cemetery Bill [HL] 2019-21

The Bill was deposited on 27 November 2019. The Examination took place on 18 December and the Bill was found to be compliant with Private Business Standing Orders.

The authorities from both Houses decided that the Bill should originate in the House of Lords.

The Bill was introduced on 22 January.

Three petitions were submitted before the deadline of 6 February. 

Second reading, with no debate, took place on 12 February. 

The Bill needed a "Wharncliffe" Examination to comply with certain standing orders concerning the consents of owners, members and directors of companies.  The Examination was on 9 March and the bill was found compliant.

The bill now proceeds to an Opposed Bill Committee to consider the petitions. No date has yet been set.

House of Lords If you are "directly and specially affected" by this Bill you may oppose the Bill or seek its amendment before a Select Committee in either or both Houses.  If you present a "petition" against the bill at the appropriate times (during a "petitioning period") you may be able to have your views on the bill heard by the Committee (in whichever House you petition).

Summary of the Highgate Cemetery Bill [HL] 2019-21

A Bill to confer powers upon the Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust to operate, maintain and improve Highgate Cemetery and to extinguish rights of burial and disturb human remains in Highgate Cemetery for the purpose of increasing the space for interments and the improvement of Highgate Cemetery; and for connected purposes.
