Latest news on the High Speed Rail (West Midlands - Crewe) Bill 2017-19 to 2019

The Bill completed Report and Third Reading in the Commons on 15 July 2019. The Bill duly had a formal first reading for introduction in the House of Lords on Tuesday 16 July.

This triggered a petitioning period for the individuals and organisations directly and specially affected by the scheme. Petitioning opened on Wednesday 17 July and closed at 1pm on Friday 16 August.

A total of 35 petitions were submitted. These will be considered in due course, once the Select Committee has been appointed and set up.

Visit the Select Committee website for the latest news   https://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/lords-select/high-speed-rail-west-midlands-crewe-bill-select-committee-lords/ and sight of the published petitions.

Second reading - the general debate on all aspects of the Bill - took place on 9 September 2019.

The Bill has been carried over into the new session. This means the Bill can continue its progress through Parliament from the start of the session.

The bill has been committed to a Select Committee to consider the petitions. The Committee will be appointed in due course.

The petition against the Bill from Colwich Parish Council was withdrawn on 15 October 2019.

The following petitions against the Bill were withdrawn on 23 October:

Dennis and Mary Witter; Hopton and Coton Parish Council; Neville Baskeyfield.

The petition against the Bill from The Parochial Church Council of Parish Church St Mary the Virgin Ingestre was withdrawn on 28 October 2019.

29/10/19: Bill committed to a Select Committee.

30/10/19: Select Committee appointed: Lord Flight; Lord Jones of Cheltenham; Lord Haselhurst; Lord Liddle; Lord Porter of Spalding; Lord Snape; Lord Walker of Gestingthorpe (chair).

Progress on the Bill, and the Committee's hearing of petitions, has been paused due to the dissolution of Parliament. Following the general election, petitioner hearings are expected to take place as soon as possible after a decision of Parliament that the Bill should resume.
